Controls on Wintertime Ventilation in Southern Drake Passage

چکیده
Abstract Drake Passage is a key region for transport between the surface and interior ocean, but mechanistic understanding of this exchange remains immature. Here, we present wintertime, submesoscale‐resolving hydrographic transects spanning southern boundary Antarctic Circumpolar Current Polar Front (PF). Despite strong wind buoyancy forcing, freshwater lens suppresses surface‐interior south PF; ventilation instead localized to PF. Multiple lines analysis suggest submesoscale processes contribute at PF, including small‐scale, O(10 km), frontal structure in water mass properties below mixed layer modulation eddy diffusivity sub‐50 km scales. These results show that sensitive both near fronts non‐local processes, example, sea‐ice melt, set stratification properties. This highlights need adaptive observing strategies constrain Southern Ocean heat carbon budgets.

Winter mesoscale circulation on the shelf slope region of the southern Drake Passage
An austral winter cruise in July–August 2006 was conducted to study the winter circulation and iron delivery processes in the Southern Drake Passage and Bransfield Strait. Results from current and hydrographic measurements revealed a circulation pattern similar to that of the austral summer season observed in previous studies: The Shackleton Transverse Ridge (STR) in the southern Drake Passage ...
متن کاملMajor Role of Microbes in Carbon Fluxes during Austral Winter in the Southern Drake Passage
Carbon cycling in Southern Ocean is a major issue in climate change, hence the need to understand the role of biota in the regulation of carbon fixation and cycling. Southern Ocean is a heterogeneous system, characterized by a strong seasonality, due to long dark winter. Yet, currently little is known about biogeochemical dynamics during this season, particularly in the deeper part of the ocean...
متن کاملOptimal multiparameter analysis of source water distributions in the Southern Drake Passage
In order to evaluate the effects of horizontal advection on iron supply in the vicinity of the Shackleton Transverse Ridge (STR) in the southern Drake Passage, the water composition in the region is estimated along the isopycnal containing the subsurface iron peak. Optimal Multiparameter (OMP) analysis of temperature, salinity, oxygen and nutrient data is used to estimate the water composition ...
متن کاملShelf-derived iron inputs drive biological productivity in the southern Drake Passage
[1] In the Southern Ocean near the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) fronts interact with shelf waters facilitating lateral transport of shelf-derived components such as iron into high-nutrient offshore regions. To trace these shelf-derived components and estimate lateral mixing rates of shelf water, we used naturally occurring radium isotopes. Short-lived radium isotopes...
